Renovations and Extensions

Creativity isn’t confined to ambitious new-build projects. At Milton, we enjoy finding creative solutions to upgrading and extending existing homes, whether we’re adapting heritage buildings to accommodate contemporary family living or revamping modernist spaces to give them a new lease of life. The addition of new and carefully considered elements can transform the way people inhabit and enjoy their homes for good.

Contemporary Garden Room – Wiltshire

This 1890’s ‘Tudorbethan’ house occupies a prominent position on one of the main routes into the town but has a stunning garden overlooking the water meadows to the rear. The extension replaces a very ordinary glazed conservatory and transforms an existing extension to create a unified, contemporary form across the back of the house. Reflecting the strong aesthetic of the existing house the new addition creates clear horizontal lines with the eaves and uses a carefully selected brick with lime mortar to work in sympathy with its Edwardian host.

Listed Town House Restoration With Three Storey Extension – Wiltshire

Our brief for this restoration and extension project offered many challenges, not least persuading the conservation officer that a contemporary addition to a fine Grade II listed house was just what it needed to become a modern family home. The building was in a bad way and our clients wanted to maximise the floorspace that could be achieved on this desirable but tight town-centre site. The design includes a 3-storey extension and a new entrance, accessed by a bridge over a glazed basement below. The basement rooms now have direct access to the south-facing garden so light fills these spaces. What had been a collection of disjointed and small, gloomy rooms, many of which were uninhabitable, has now been transformed into a luxurious town house that is unique and exciting, where new and old work together.

Georgian House Extension – Wiltshire

A quintessential Georgian ‘dolls house’ originally built as one of a pair within the formal setting of the model farm for a large estate. The grade II listing reflects the heritage significance of the original house so our interventions had to be carefully considered to make the house suitable for modern family life whilst respecting the original character and setting of the historic building.

Extension To Town House – Oxfordshire

This semi-detached Oxford townhouse was built in 1877. Since then it has had a number of additions and alterations, although none that have really made a positive contribution to its history. Our proposals for full refurbishment and ground floor extension have added a real sense of modern style to the house, and introduced a strong connection to the garden.

Contemporary Extension – Wiltshire

Our client wanted to transform this 1980’s house with some strikingly modern interventions. Easier said than done considering its location in the heart of the village conservation area, but we made our case and convinced the Planners to agree. The result is a beautiful home that seamlessly integrates the interior spaces with the wonderful garden.

Cantilevered Extension – Berkshire

An impressive upgrade to a modern home that extends both inside and outside living space and creates a fresh and dramatic perspective in this desirable riverside location.

Extension To Village House – Wiltshire

This 1890’s terraced cottage has been brought fully up to date with a stylish ground floor extension. It was a big challenge to achieve such a wonderful sense of space with an unashamedly contemporary feel without taking away from the character of the original building, but we feel we’ve managed to achieve just that.

Timber Frame Extension – Wiltshire

Our clients were keen to explore innovative timber building techniques and commissioned Slovenian company Riko to manufacture the whole extension at their factory the other side of the Alps. “On Monday there was just a concrete slab in the ground. Now it’s Friday and the whole extension is almost built.” (Tim, client)
